Nonalcoholic Wines That Are Worth a Second Glass

October 1, 2025

When a top Napa winemaker and an innovative vintner team up to create a line of five nonalcoholic wines, you expect them to be good—and they are, but some are better than others. The sparkling white is my favorite, the still white a close second. The spicy, plummy red, made from malbec, is not as appealing, but it’s one of the best reds I’ve tried.

Wine, With or Without Alcohol?

Napa vintners Aaron Pott and Stephanie Honig partnered together to create the Missing Thorn lineup of DA wines, including a red, rosé and a sparkling all made from Barbera, and a white wine and sparkling offering made from Albariño. Pott is best known for his classic Napa wines, but with this new project he’s looking to put premium DA wines on the market.

Why Is It So Hard to Find a Good Nonalcoholic Wine?

March 28, 2025

The Missing Thorn wines, made by Mr. Pott in California, were also quite good. The white was made with dealcoholized albariño, water, grape juice concentrate, natural flavors and gum arabic, which Mr. Pott called a “flavor encapsulator,” giving his wines more richeness and density. It was balanced and seemed relatively complete with a minimal sense of missing components. The red, made with dealcoholized malbec, was likewise balanced and refreshing.
